The Tigers are balanced.

Five different Linden High School football players scored touchdowns as the Tigers rolled to a 35-0 nonconference win over Scotch Plains-Fanwood Friday.

Linden head coach Deon Candia said he thinks highly of the team spreading its firepower around.

“It’s a good problem to have but we still have some kids where we have to find a way to get them the ball,” Candia said. “But the thing about these kids is they want win. We don’t have kids who are selfish. We don’t have kids who think they should get a certain amount of carries. It’s just we want to win.”

Linden (2-0) used a sustained drive to score on its first possession of the game, powered by 20-yard Trell Myers’ toss to Ruhann Peele and a 52-yard sweep by running back William Ingram. Ingram capped the drive with a 10-yard touchdown run.

On their second possession, the Tigers used midfield positioning to their advantage and marched the ball downfield over the next five minutes. Myers scrambled six yards on a quarterback keeper for the score.

Myers later found Peele in the end zone on a fade with 21 seconds left in the half to make it 21-0 Linden.

“I’m proud how we maintained a lead when we were on top and were able to finish, that’s a momentum builder,” Candia said. “We were are able to stay focused and understand that football is a game of momentum. You can’t tell what’s going to happen so you have to play your game, stay focused and keep the lead.”

On their first possession of the second half, a 36-yard run by Kevin Rodriguez highlighted a 61-yard drive into the end zone. Then Peele returned a punt 45 yards for a TD at the end of the third quarter to close the scoring.

The Raiders (1-1) did threaten in the third quarter when they took over the ball on Linden’s 30-yard line after a botched punt. Running back Neville Hall and quarterback Gary Binkiewicz broke off nice runs but the drive eventually ended on downs.
